Frontend Developer interview questions

These are questions Frontend Developer candidates often hear, with a short note on what a strong answer covers. Reading them helps; saying your answers out loud helps more.

  1. Walk me through what happens between typing a URL and seeing the page.

Cover DNS, the request, HTML parsing, CSS and JS loading, and rendering. Depth matters more than speed.

  2. How would you make a slow page load faster?

Start with how you'd measure (Lighthouse, network tab), then name fixes: smaller bundles, lazy loading, image sizes, caching.

  3. Explain how state works in React and when you'd lift state up or use context.

Give a concrete example from a project, not just definitions.

  4. How do you make a component accessible?

Mention semantic HTML, labels, keyboard focus, colour contrast and testing with a screen reader.

  5. Tell me about a UI bug that was hard to track down.

Use STAR: what broke, how you narrowed it down, the fix, and what you changed afterwards.

  6. How do you handle disagreements with designers about a layout?

Show you weigh user impact and effort, and that you find a shared answer rather than winning.
